Rycerzy, czyli wojowników konnych, zaczęto łączyć z pojęciem rycerskości, gdy zostało ono spopularyzowane przez średniowieczną literaturę. Oczekiwano od nich, że będą walczyć odważnie i honorowo oraz pozostaną lojalni wobec swego pana – w razie konieczności – aż do śmierci.
