W centrum Leningradu na wybrzeżu Newy, na terenie jednego z najpiękniejszych zespołów architektonicznych miasta usytuowane jest znane na całym świecie muzeum - Ermitaż. Zespół gmachów, które zajmuje Ermitaż, wznoszony był poczynając od drugiej połowy XVIII wieku do połowy XIX stulecia. W różnym czasie dobudowano do niego jeszcze cztery gmachy: Mały Ermitaż, Stary Ermitaż, Nowy Ermitaż oraz Teatr przy Ermitażu. W tworzeniu zespołu brali udział słynni architekci XVIII-XIX wieku: Rastrelli, Delamoth, Felten, Stasow. Zespół architektoniczny Ermitażu zadziwia swoją majestatycznością i harmonią, mimo że charakter budynków odzwierciedla kolejne zmiany panujących w architekturze stylów - rosyjskiego baroku i klasycyzmu. Precyzja przestrzennego rozplanowania zespołu oraz wnętrz dobrze koresponduje z różnorodnością i bogactwem jego zewnętrznego i wewnętrznego wystroju. Wnętrza zespołu tworzyli Delamoth, Felten, Quarenghi. W ich wystroju szeroko zastosowano sztukaterię, pozłacaną snycerkę, cenne gatunki drewna. Szczególnym pięknem wyróżniają się takie wnętrza jak Sala Malachitowa, Sala Pawilonowa, Loggie Rafaela, majestatyczne Schody Jordanowskie. Zespół architektoniczny Ermitażu jest wybitnym zabytkiem budownictwa XVIII-XIX wieku.

Leningrad's Hermitage collection of French art from the mid-nineteenth to the early twentieth century is one of the best in the world. It consists of more than 300 paintings, many of which rate among the world's finest. Preserved here are eight pictures by Claude Monet, six by Auguste Renoir, eleven by Paul Cezanne, fifteen by Paul Gauguin, thirty-eight by Pablo Picasso, and thirty-seven by Henri Matisse. This beautiful volume offers a complete publication of the uniąue collection from the Hermitage, with full-colour reproductions and close-ups of many details. The reproductions are of a high quality and give the viewer the impression that he is seeing the original works. The Introduction is dedicated to the history and distinguishing features of the collection. Short notes accompanying each reproduction inform the reader of the picture's size, provenance and techniąue.

The collection of graphic works in the Hermitage is rightly considered one of the best in the world. The pen and pencil drawings, watercolours, chalk drawings and pastels housed in the Hermitage Print Room enable us to trace the evolution of drawing in Western European art from the Renaissance up to present day. Different national schools and artistic trends of Western Europę are amply illustrated in the Hermitage collection. The Flemish, Dutch, and French schools are particularly well represented, as these schools were most popular when the collection was first put together. The collection contains works by Old Masters, such as Titian, Yeronese, Rubens, Van Dyck, Rembrandt, Dürer, Clouet, and Watteau, and also morę recent masterpieces by Manet, Degas, Liebermann, and Picasso.

The first complete publication of Rembrandt's paintings in the Soviet Union, this is a volume both beautiful and significant. The collection of Rembrandts in Soviet museums - one of the finest in the world - is here sumptuously illustrated anddocumented with scholarly breadth and precision. Each of the thirty paintings (24 from the Hermitage, Leningrad; 6 from the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, Moscow) is reproduced in full color admirably true to the Rembrandt palette. In addition there are 34 large full-color plates of details of the paintings, chosen with great discernment to bring the viewer close to the canvas. Aside from the aesthetic reward to be gained from viewing these maryelous works, there is much to be learned from this new book. Two Introductory Articles provide a history of the collection of Rembrandt's paintings in Russia and an art-historical study of them. This amply illustrated book reproduces the best works of German and Austrian painters (15th to 20th century) from the collection of the Hermitage Museum in Leningrad. The collection, which amounts to more than 700 paintings and includes many works by outstanding masters, is the largest outside Germany and Austrian. It gives a comprehensive account of the development of German and Austrian painting over the period of five centuries.

The art of the German Renaissance is represented in the Hermitage by the excellent canvases of Lucas Cranach the Elder, Ambrosius Holbein, Barthel Bruyn, Georg Pencz and other eminent painters. Of particular note among 17th-century paintings are works by Johann Heinrich Schonfeld, Christoph Paudiss and Jurgen Ovens. The collection is especially rich in paintings dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. These include portraits by Antoine Pesne, works by the Classicist painters Anton Raffael Mengs and Angelica Kauffmann, and an important group of works by German landscape painters. Remarkable among the latter are Romantic landscapes by Caspar David Friedrich. The art of portraiture is illustrated by the first-rate canvases of Johann Friedrich August Tischbein and by the works of the Austrian masters -.lohann Baptist Lampi, Josef Grassi, Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller, Hans Makart and others.

All the leading German schools of painting are represented in the collection by major names: the Dusseldorf school, by Carl Friedrich Lessing, Ludwig Knaus and the Achenbach brothers; the Berlin school, by Franz Krüger and Eduard Magnus; and the Munich school, by Heinrich Maria von Hess and Peter von Hess.

The materiał is arranged chronologically. The introductory articles to the first section (15th to 18th century) and the second section (19th and 20th centuries) provide a generał description of the collection and tell the history of its formation.
